Unnecessary Complications After Liposuction: When the Treatment Is Not the Right One
Clinical Case
A patient, approximately 2 months after a 360° liposuction procedure, had been consistently undergoing maderotherapy sessions (a technique that uses wooden instruments to apply pressure to the tissues) with the aim of reducing swelling.
At the time of consultation, she presented with:
• Persistent edema
• Firm, tense tissue
• New-onset lower back pain
What happened?
Maderotherapy is a technique that applies mechanical pressure to stimulate circulation and influence tissue structure. However, during the post-operative phase, tissues are still healing and the lymphatic system remains highly sensitive.
The use of intensive techniques at this stage may:
• increase inflammation
• impair natural lymphatic drainage
• contribute to tissue tension and physical discomfort
Appropriate Approach
At this stage, the body requires careful support rather than aggressive stimulation:
• manual lymphatic drainage, performed with light, controlled touch
• slow, rhythmic movements that respect tissue physiology
• a personalised treatment approach, adapted to the stage of recovery
